Spousal Support

Support support (otherwise known as ‘alimony’) refers to support given to the dependent spouse upon separation. Spousal support can be paid for a limited period of time or it can be paid for an indefinite period of time.

The purpose of spousal support is typically to compensate the dependent spouse for sacrifices that allowed the higher earning spouse to earn more during the marriage and/or to help ease the financial burden of separation for the lower earning spouse.

If entitlement to spousal support can be established, spousal support is typically paid based on a mathematical formula called the spousal support advisory guidelines. Generally, the longer the marriage and the greater the income disparity between the spouses, the greater amount and for the longer duration that spousal support is paid.
